TOPIC: 420SS Plating to Increase the Life of a Mold

Submitted: October, 2001

Is there a recommended plating for 420SS to increase the life of a PVC mold?

To increase the life of a PVC mold one should avoid any treatment containing chrome. PVC emits hydrochloric acid, which is precisely what is used to strip chrome by plating companies.

Treatments such as TiN may provide a good hard surface, but wear might lead to flaking, due to erosion of the white layer substrate.

Recommended plating for 420 Stainless Steel, to increase the life of a PVC mold, might be an electroless nickel-based coating, with an additive to provide better wear resistance. You may consider NiHard, a combination of Nickel and Cobalt, from Bales Mold Service. They can be reached at 1-800-215-6653 or at http://www.balesmold.com/services.htm.
