To increase the life of a PVC mold one should avoid any treatment
containing chrome. PVC emits hydrochloric acid, which is precisely
what is used to strip chrome by plating companies. Treatments
such as TiN may provide a good hard surface, but wear might lead
to flaking, due to erosion of the white layer substrate.
Recommended plating for 420 Stainless Steel, to increase the
life of a PVC mold, might be an electroless nickel-based coating,
with an additive to provide better wear resistance. You may
