TOPIC: Establishing a Consistent Tool Box

Submitted: July, 2003

We are adding more structure to our maintenance department and are trying to establish the proper tools for working on our molds. What types of tools would be good when establishing a consistent tool box?

Without knowing exactly what kind of molds you have, and the type of maintenance you want to perform in the press, the best we can do is put together a list of standard tools that should be in any centralized toolbox.

Including but not limited to:
  • Standard Allen Wrench set 1/64" to 1/2" & larger if called for
  • Standard 3/8" or 1/2" drive Socket Set to 1"
  • Standard Set of Open End/Box End Wrenches 3/16" to 3/4"
  • Breaker Bar 3/8" and 1/2" drive
  • Dead Blow Hammers 18OZ. to 3 lbs.
  • Ball Peen (machinists) Hammers 8,12, & 24 OZ
  • Brass Hammer 24OZ.
  • Assortment of screwdrivers, Flat Blade and Phillips
  • Crescent Wrenches 6" & 12"
  • Standard Pliers
  • Channel Lock Pliers
  • Side Cutters
  • Tin Snips for cutting shims
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Brass Putty Knife
  • 2 Pry Bars

These are standard maintenance tools that most mechanics/ machinists will utilize. Keep in mind that tool types in this trade are dictated by mold/job requirements, and are supplemented by measuring/inspection equipment owned and maintained by your company.
